Balance Evaluation Platform Evaluator Identifying balance disorders is crucial to preventing falls. The Better Balance platform is placed in your practice to identify at-risk patients. The equipment includes a platform, hardware and software for collecting and reading the data. Patients with abnormal readings are identified in just 60 seconds by comparing the patient's results against a normative database. Further examinations for the patients with abnormal readings should be scheduled for diagnosing the exact cause of their disorder by determining a vestibular or central nervous system condition. Who are the candidates for dizziness?

Videonystagmography (VNG) Testing Equipment Videonystagmography(VNG) is the gold standard test for vestibular pathology and is reimbursed by all major insurance carriers and Medicare. The equipment includes a balance platform, computer and monitor and hardware and softwarefor collecting and reading the data. Portable computer stands are available separately. VNG tests take about 45 minutes to complete and can be done with a technician in your practice. After receiving the first test interpretive, a proper and accurate diagnosis and treatment plan can be devised. Download brochure
On a national average, Medicare reimburses about $500 per VNG test. Secure Health, Inc. can provide all of the proper CPT and IC-9 codes for you while completing your free return on investment--clinic assessment.

Caloric Testing: An Essential Element of Videonystagmography (VNG)

Since the early days of the first pioneers of vestibular evaluation, the usefulness of stimulating the inner ear with both cool and warm thermal challenges has been recognized. When understanding of the relationship of anatomical structures with physiologic responses became manifest, it was found that the responses of such stimuli constituted a direct reflection of the intactness of the peripheral vestibular system, specifically the horizontal semicircular canal. This was correlated and substantiated by temporal bone histopathology specimens. In fact, it became known that responses of the horizontal canal to cool and warm water or air irrigation reflected the overall status of all three semicircular canals, i.e. superior, horizontal and posterior. Moreover, it was realized that caloric testing was the ONLY PORTION of the electronystagmogram, and later the videonystagmogram, which isolated the responses of these structures of the inner ear. The diagnosis of unilateral or bilateral caloric weaknesses could then be made and associated with known causes of peripheral vestibular dysfunction.
Recently, certain manufacturers of videonystagmography equipment have
de-emphasized the importance of caloric testing as an unnecessary expense. Such belief has absolutely no basis in normal or pathologic physiology. In fact, it reflects a lack of not only understanding vestibular function, but also an alarming trend towards inadequate patient care. While leaving this portion of the VNG out of the picture strictly for reasons of economy, such an action deprives the patient of essential diagnostic findings resulting in a serious deficiency in lesion localization and the possible oversight of a dangerous life-threatening condition. On a much more mundane note, third party payors have long accepted the coding and billing for caloric testing, and even the most conservative, if not reactionary groups, understand the absolute importance of binaural bithermal testing. Do not be lulled into the belief that caloric testing should be abandoned. I can assure you such an operating agenda will produce deleterious results for both patient and doctor.
